Ant.

Ant. Alleluia. The Lord Christ hath ascended up into heaven. * O come let us worship Him. Alleluia.
Ant. Alleluia. The Lord Christ hath ascended up into heaven. * O come let us worship Him. Alleluia.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. Alleluia. The Lord Christ hath ascended up into heaven. * O come let us worship Him. Alleluia.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come let us worship Him. Alleluia.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. Alleluia. The Lord Christ hath ascended up into heaven. * O come let us worship Him. Alleluia.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come let us worship Him. Alleluia.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. Alleluia. The Lord Christ hath ascended up into heaven. * O come let us worship Him. Alleluia.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Hymnus {ex Commune aut Festo}
Ætérne Rex altíssime,
Redémptor et fidélium,
Cui mors perémpta détulit
Summæ triúmphum glóriæ:

Ascéndis orbes síderum,
Quo te vocábat cǽlitus
Colláta, non humánitus,
Rerum potéstas ómnium:

Ut trina rerum máchina,
Cæléstium, terréstrium,
Et inferórum cóndita,
Flectat genu iam súbdita.

Tremunt vidéntes Angeli
Versam vicem mortálium:
Peccat caro, mundat caro,
Regnat Deus Dei caro.

Sis ipse nostrum gáudium,
Manens olýmpo prǽmium,
Mundi regis qui fábricam,
Mundána vincens gáudia.

Hinc te precántes quǽsumus,
Ignósce culpis ómnibus,
Et corda sursum súbleva
Ad te supérna grátia.

Ut, cum repénte cœ́peris
Clarére nube iúdicis,
Pœnas repéllas débitas,
Reddas corónas pérditas.

Iesu, tibi sit glória,
Qui victor in cælum redis,
Cum Patre, et almo Spíritu,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.
Hymn {from the Common or Feast}
Eternal Monarch, King most high,
Whose blood hath brought redemption nigh,
By whom the death of death was wrought,
And conquering grace's battle fought:

Ascending by the starry road,
This day thou wentest home to God,
By heaven to power unending called,
And by no human hand installed.

That so, in nature's triple frame,
Each heavenly and each earthly name,
And things in hell's abyss abhorred,
May bend the knee and own him Lord.

Yea, angels tremble when they see
How changed is our humanity;
That flesh hath purged what flesh had stained,
And God, the flesh of God, hath reigned.

Be thou our joy, O mighty Lord,
As thou wilt be our great reward;
Earth's joys to thee are nothing worth,
Thou joy and crown of heaven and earth.

To thee we therefore humbly pray
That thou wouldst purge our sins away,
And draw our hearts by cords of grace
To thy celestial dwelling-place.

So when the judgement day shall come,
And all must rise to meet their doom,
Thou wilt remit the debts we owe,
And our lost crowns again bestow.

All glory, Lord, to thee we pay,
Ascending o'er the stars today;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To Father and to Paraclete.
Amen.

Psalm 105(32-48) [6]
105:32 They provoked him also at the waters of contradiction: * and Moses was afflicted for their sakes: because they exasperated his spirit.
105:33 And he distinguished with his lips; * they did not destroy the nations of which the Lord spoke unto them.
105:35 And they were mingled among the heathens, and learned their works: and served their idols, * and it became a stumblingblock to them.
105:37 And they sacrificed their sons, * and their daughters to devils.
105:38 And they shed innocent blood: * the blood of their sons and of their daughters which they sacrificed to the idols of Chanaan.
105:39 And the land was polluted with blood, and was defiled with their works: * and they went aside after their own inventions.
105:40 And the Lord was exceedingly angry with his people: * and he abhorred his inheritance.
105:41 And he delivered them into the hands of the nations: * and they that hated them had dominion over them.
105:42 And their enemies afflicted them: and they were humbled under their hands: * many times did he deliver them.
105:43 But they provoked him with their counsel: * and they were brought low by their iniquities.
105:44 And he saw when they were in tribulation: * and he heard their prayer.
105:45 And he was mindful of his covenant: * and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
105:46 And he gave them unto mercies, * in the sight of all those that had made them captives.
105:47 Save us, O Lord, our God: * and gather us from among nations:
105:47 That we may give thanks to thy holy name, * and may glory in thy praise.
105:48 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting: * and let all the people say: So be it, so be it.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

106:3 From the rising and the setting of the sun, * from the north and from the sea.
106:4 They wandered in a wilderness, in a place without water: * they found not the way of a city for their habitation.
106:5 They were hungry and thirsty: * their soul fainted in them.
106:6 And they cried to the Lord in their tribulation: * and he delivered them out of their distresses.
106:7 And he led them into the right way: * that they might go to a city of habitation.
106:8 Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: * and his wonderful works to the children of men.
106:9 For he hath satisfied the empty soul, * and hath filled the hungry soul with good things.
106:10 Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: * bound in want and in iron.
106:11 Because they had exasperated the words of God: * and provoked the counsel of the most High:
106:12 And their heart was humbled with labours: * they were weakened, and there was none to help them.
106:13 Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction: * and he delivered them out of their distresses.
106:14 And he brought them out of darkness, * and the shadow of death; and broke their bonds in sunder.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem
Ioannes 14:15-21
In illo témpore: Dixit Iesus discípulis suis: Si dilígitis me, mandáta mea serváte.

℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Ego rogábo Patrem, et álium Paráclitum dabit vobis,
* Ut máneat vobíscum in ætérnum, Spíritum veritátis, allelúia.
℟. Ut máneat vobíscum in ætérnum, Spíritum veritátis, allelúia.

℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Gospel's holy lection be our safety and protection. Amen.

From the Holy Gospel according to John
John 14:15-21
At that time, Jesus said unto His disciples: If ye love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter. And so on.

Homily by St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo
74th and 75th Tracts on John
By these words of the Lord: "I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter", He doth imply that Himself is a Comforter. The Greek word used, namely "Parakletos," signifieth also an Advocate, and is used in that sense where it is written "We have an Advocate Parakleton with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous." "Even the Spirit of truth, Whom the world cannot receive," because as we read elsewhere, "the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be" as we may say plainly nothing can make unrighteousness righteous. By "the world," in this place, we must understand the lovers of the world, a love which cometh not of the Father. And therefore it is that this love of the world, which we strive to lessen and to destroy in ourselves, is contrary to "the love of God, which is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter,
* That He may abide with you for ever, even the Spirit of truth. Alleluia.
℣. For if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.
℟. That He may abide with you for ever, even the Spirit of truth. Alleluia.
℣. Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum. Amen.

Lectio 2

℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. God's most mighty strength alway be His people's staff and stay. Amen.

Reading 2
The Spirit of truth Whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him "for to love the world is to lack those spiritual eyes, which are able to see Him Who is invisible, the Holy Ghost. "But ye know Him," saith the Lord to His disciples, "for He shall dwell with you, and shall be in you." He will be in them to dwell in them, not dwell in them to be in them for one must first be in a place before one dwell there. But lest the Apostles should think that the words, "He shall dwell with you," signified that He should visibly abide with them for a while, as do guests in the houses of men, the Lord saith in explanation "He shall be in you."
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. For if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you;
* And when He is come, He will guide you into all truth. Alleluia.
℣. For He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak and He will show you things to come.
℟. And when He is come, He will guide you into all truth. Alleluia.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. And when He is come, He will guide you into all truth. Alleluia.
℣. Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum. Amen.

Lectio 3
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

Reading 3
Therefore is He seen That is invisible. If He were not in us we could have in us no knowledge of Him but He is seen in us, as we see our conscience. We see the faces of other men, but we cannot see our Own but of consciences we see none save that within ourselves. But our conscience is never elsewhere but within us whereas the Holy Ghost may be without us, as well as within us. He is given to be within us, and, unless He be within us, we can neither see nor know Him, either within or without us. Then, after that He had promised the Holy Ghost, the Lord, lest they should deem that He was to give them that other Comforter instead of Himself, and that He Himself was to be no longer with them, said also "I will not leave you orphans I will come to you." Therefore, although the Son of God hath made us by adoption sons of His Own Father, and hath willed that the Same Who is His Father by nature should be our Father by grace, nevertheless, He showeth that Himself hath toward us a love as of a Father, where He saith "I will not leave you orphans."
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

91:10 For behold thy enemies, O Lord, for behold thy enemies shall perish: * and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

63:2 Hear, O God, my prayer, when I make supplication to thee: * deliver my soul from the fear of the enemy.
63:3 Thou hast protected me from the assembly of the malignant; * from the multitude of the workers of iniquity.
63:4 For they have whetted their tongues like a sword; * they have bent their bow a bitter thing, to shoot in secret the undefiled.
63:6 They will shoot at him on a sudden, and will not fear: * they are resolute in wickedness.
63:6 They have talked of hiding snares; * they have said: Who shall see them?
63:7 They have searched after iniquities: * they have failed in their search.
63:7 Man shall come to a deep heart: * and God shall be exalted.
63:8 The arrows of children are their wounds: * and their tongues against them are made weak.
63:9 All that saw them were troubled; * and every man was afraid.
63:10 And they declared the works of God: * and understood his doings.
63:11 The just shall rejoice in the Lord, and shall hope in him: * and all the upright in heart shall be praised.

Sir 36:1-16
36:1 Have mercy upon us, O God of all, and behold us, * and shew us the light of thy mercies:
36:2 And send thy fear upon the nations, * that have not sought after thee:
36:3 That they may know that there is no God beside thee, * and that they may shew forth thy wonders.
36:4 Lift up thy hand over the strange nations, * that they may see thy power.

Act. 1:1-2
The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began to do and to teach, Until the day on which, giving commandments by the Holy Ghost to the apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
Hail, thou who man's Redeemer art,
Jesu, the joy of every heart;
Great Maker of the world's wide frame,
And purest love's delight and flame:

What nameless mercy thee o'ercame,
To bear our load of sin and shame?
For guiltless, thou thy life didst give,
That sinful erring man might live.

The realms of woe are forced by thee,
Its captives from their chains set free;
And thou, amid thy ransomed train,
At God's right hand dost victor reign.

Let mercy sweet with thee prevail,
To cure the wounds we now bewail;
Oh, bless us with thy holy sight,
And fill us with eternal light.

Our guide, our way to heavenly rest,
Be thou the aim of every breast;
Be thou the soother of our tears,
Our sweet reward above the spheres.
Amen.

Hymn
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

93:21 Captábunt in ánimam iusti: * et sánguinem innocéntem condemnábunt.
93:22 Et factus est mihi Dóminus in refúgium: * et Deus meus in adiutórium spei meæ.

93:13 That thou mayst give him rest from the evil days: * till a pit be dug for the wicked.
93:14 For the Lord will not cast off his people: * neither will he forsake his own inheritance.
93:15 Until justice be turned into judgment: * and they that are near it are all the upright in heart.
93:16 Who shall rise up for me against the evildoers? * or who shall stand with me against the workers of iniquity?
93:17 Unless the Lord had been my helper, * my soul had almost dwelt in hell.
93:18 If I said: My foot is moved: * thy mercy, O Lord, assisted me.
93:19 According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, * thy comforts have given joy to my soul.
93:20 Doth the seat of iniquity stick to thee, * who framest labour in commandment?
93:21 They will hunt after the soul of the just, * and will condemn innocent blood.
93:22 But the Lord is my refuge: * and my God the help of my hope.
93:23 And he will render them their iniquity: and in their malice he will destroy them: * the Lord our God will destroy them.

Martyrologium (anticip.)
May 20th 2018, the 5th day of the Moon,

The day of Pentecost, when the Holy Ghost came down upon the disciples at Jerusalem in the form of fiery tongues.
On the 20th day of May, were born into the better life:

At Aquila, in the Abruzzi, holy Bernardine of Sienna, of the Order of Friars Minors, who enlightened Italy both by word and example.
At Rome, on the Salarian Way, [about A.D. 160] the holy Virgin Basilla. She was of the blood of kings and illustriously betrothed, but rejected her spouse, whereupon he accused her of being a Christian, and the Emperor Gallienus ordered that she should either take him back or perish by the sword. She answered that the King of kings was her Bridegroom, and the sword was accordingly passed through her.
At Nimes, in Gaul, the holy martyr Baudelius. He was apprehended and would not sacrifice, and so remaining inmovable amidst stripes and torments, grasped the palm of martyrdom by a death precious in the sight of the Lord.
At Edessa, in Syria, the holy martyrs Thalalaeus, Asterius, Alexander, and their companions, who suffered under the Emperor Numerian.
In the Thebai'd, the holy martyr Aquila, who was lacerated with combs, for Christ's sake.
At Bourges, in Gaul, [in the seventh century,] the holy Confessor Austregisilus, [Bishop of that see.]
At Brescia, [early in the seventh century,] the holy Anastasius, Bishop [of that see.]
At Pavia, [in the eighth century,] the holy Theodore, Bishop [of that see.]
At Rome, the holy Plautilla, a woman of Consular rank and mother of the blessed Flavia Domitilla. She was baptized by the holy Apostle Peter, and after being eminent for excellency, fell asleep in peace.
℣. And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

O God of truth, O Lord of might,
Who orderest time and change aright,
Who send’st the early morning ray,
And light’st the glow of perfect day:

Extinguish thou each sinful fire,
And banish every ill desire;
And while thou keep’st the body whole,
Shed forth thy peace upon the soul.

Almighty Father, hear our cry,
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord most High,
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.
Amen.

O strength and stay upholding all creation,
Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide,
Yet day by day the light in due gradation
From hour to hour through all its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending,
An eve untouched by shadows of decay,
The brightness of a holy death-bed blending
With dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,
And thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word,
Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.

Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Proper of the season}
Acts 2:1-2
When the day of Pentecost was fully come, the disciples were all with one accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
The first verse of the following hymn is said genuflecting.
Creator-Spirit, all-divine,
Come, visit every soul of thine,
And fill with thy celestial flame
The hearts which thou thyself didst frame.

O gift of God, thine is the sweet
Consoling name of Paraclete
And spring of life and fire and love
And unction flowing from above.

The mystic sevenfold gifts are thine,
Finger of God's right hand divine;
The Father's promise sent to teach
The tongue a rich and heavenly speech.

Kindle with fire brought from above
Each sense, and fill our hearts with love;
And grant our flesh, so weak and frail,
The strength of thine which cannot fail.

Drive far away our deadly foe,
And grant us thy true peace to know;
So we, led by thy guidance still,
May safely pass through every ill.

To us, through thee, the grace be shown
To know the Father and the Son;
And Spirit of them both, may we
Forever rest our faith in thee.

To Sire and Son be praises meet,
And to the Holy Paraclete;
And may Christ send us from above
That Holy Spirit's gift of love.
Amen

Hymn
Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That with thy wonted favor thou
Wouldst be our guard and keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
From nightly fears and fantasies;
Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.
Amen.
